An unusual present from the Arctic

Билинский Евгений Александрович. 12 лет. An unusual present from the Arctic. HIGH.

Before I took part in the Expedition through the Arctic, I had lived by a schedule. In the Arctic you lose sense of time. Having 24 hours of sunlight we could start our hiking at what we thought was 3 PM but it was actually 3 AM.
Our entire being was focused on one thing: survival.
That day or night (I can’t say for sure) I was on polar bear watch while the others were sleeping.
I didn’t have to fall asleep so I looked outside for some fresh air and came face to face with a ...

a polar bear. I had never seen him before I must say. I had to run but I had been so scared that I forgot how to move. I was only able to look in the eyes of my death. I was somehow hypnotized for a moment. “I have to pretend I’m a snowman maybe or…,”I started to think. Then I began slowly returning to the real life. And at some moment I started running. But the polar bear didn’t move. He’d preferred staying in his place and eating a big tasty fish from the bag which was standing just near door of our house. Someone of the Expedition had gone fishing and dropped it there. “My God,” I thought, “he is just hungry.” I gave him another fish. He came up to me. I saw he wasn’t going to kill me. When my mates got up they were shocked to see me together with the polar bear. It was a real fun to watch them when they were jumping, running from side to side and shouting. I had been living in the Arctic for a month and made great friends with my polar bear before my returning home. The most unusual thing in it was that every time I was on polar bear watch my new friend came to me, I fed him (fish, canned milk, bread or even sweets) and then he warmed me. I leant against his warm coat and he didn’t run away as if it was his gratitude for the food. More than that he (I say “he” not “it” because he was like a man) let me comb his warm white coat and when I came home I had a great pack of his wool with me. My mum could hardly believe me but the wool was real. She’s knitted a very warm sweater for me and now it’s the most unusual present in my life.
