A Bear Cub’s Dream

Шилов Василий Алексеевич. 9 лет. A Bear Cub’s Dream. LOW.

Snowy is a little polar bear cub. He lives in the northern Arctic with his family. Mummy bear, Daddy bear and Snowy can see ice and snow everywhere every day. They like swimming from ice floe to ice floe and digging holes in snow banks.
One day Snowy says, "I’m tired of this ice and snow. I’m going to live where I can see something quite different."
"But your home is here! Look!
The snowflakes are dancing in the air! They are so beautiful! Listen to the snow! It’s humming a very funny song, "scoosh-scoosh, scoosh-scoosh", his mother tells him.
"Nothing can stop me", answers Snowy. "I’m packing my things and ...

and I’m going to set out soon”. Next morning Snowy said “Good-bye!” to his Mummy bear and Daddy bear and his journey started. He went forward quickly, but nothing changed around him. He could see only ice and snow. Suddenly Snowy saw a small light at a distance. He ran faster and soon he noticed very strange animals. “Why are they walking on their two legs?” he thought. But they were not animals, of course. They were people – members of an Arctic expedition who worked at a British polar station. One of the men saw the bear cub and told his friends about him. They brought Snowy some fish and took him to their place. Those people were very kind to the bear. They gave him food and played snowballs with him. Snowy was happy to stay with the merry men. Two days later an ice-breaker came up to that place. It brought food stuffs to the polar explorers. The captain of the ship liked the small polar bear. He took the bear cub on board the ship. It was an interesting voyage for Snowy. Everything was new to him. But when they came to London the captain didn’t know where and how to keep the bear. He decided to give Snowy to the Zoo. At first Snowy liked living there. His open-air cage was large, the water was clean and the food was tasty. There were a lot of people in the Zoo. Some of them took care of the animals and much more people came to the Zoo to see the animals from all over the world. Children gave the bear sweets. By the way, he had a sweet tooth! At night Snowy liked to sit in the moonlight and look at the stars. However, from time to time he felt too lonely and sad. “Nobody needs me here! Nobody loves me!” Snowy thought. He missed his Mummy bear. He often remembered his Mummy’s voice “Sleep, my baby, Don’t cry! I will sing a lullaby. Shut your little eyes and doze. Put your paw upon your nose!” Snowy loved his Mummy very much. “Home, sweet home! How far it is now! Who will help me come back to my Arctic?” he thought. He closed his eyes and tried to sleep… At last Snowy understood that there is no place like home. Maybe you will be able help the poor polar bear. Let’s try to do it.
