giant bear. He was walking around our tents, attracted by the smell of food we cooked in the camp-fire. When I went out, I have been noticed by him at the same time, when I have spotted him. He froze two steps ahead of me and his pearl-white fur shined under the bright light of red Arctic sun. As I was very scared, I was not sure if I could have shot him if I had a rifle in my hands. I did not have any weapon, because I was not going to go anywhere, just wanted to get some fresh air. However, moments later I have seen that the bear did not show any aggression while I was standing opposite him. Furthermore, it became obvious, that he was scared too! Half of a minute we were standing face to face: I tried not to look at his eyes, he uttered a dull growling. Then he made a step backwards, I did the same, next step, and I went out of sight in the tent’s hatch. Last what I have seen was bears’ back, he had turned around and ran along the lines of ice-hummock. It was a happy end, but after this incident in the Arctic, I have never gone out alone and always had a rifle in my hands.
