Before I took part in the Expedition through the Arctic, I had lived by a schedule. In the Arctic you lose sense of time. Having 24 hours of sunlight we could start our hiking at what we thought was 3 PM but it was actually 3 AM.
Our entire being was focused on one thing: survival.
That day or night (I can’t say for sure) I was on polar bear watch while the others were sleeping.
I didn’t have to fall asleep so I looked outside for some fresh air and came face to face with a ...

the big and terrible polar bear.
He was very frightened by what he saw, because the bear was coming straight at him.
He quickly closed the door tightly. And with a trembling voice he called his comrades, but even though the booth attendant was very close to the tents nobody heard him. Having crouched in a corner out of fear, the guard sat and waited until the animal leaves, but the bear did not want to leave.
He lay down in front of the door and seemed to be waiting for the guard.
The guard didn’t know what to do, he decided that the bear should be given some food and he will leave.
Having searched in the locker, he found some bread and threw it to the bear.
The animal quickly rushed to the bread. Having fought the fear the guard went to the window and looked at the bear.
The bear gave a glance to the guard, as if saying thank you, and fled into the woods.
Since then, the bear came to his friend to eat and hear a kind word, because they became friends.
The guard gave him a name. He called the bear Umka and he became a mascot of the expedition.
